About

Nicholas D. Roes is a contemporary painter based in New York. His work moves between rural landscapes, coastal works, and minimalist abstractions, exploring the relationship between memory, place, structure, and atmosphere.

Raised on his family’s farm in the foothills of the Adirondacks, Roes developed an early awareness of land, labor, weather, and the quiet visual rhythms of rural life. These influences continue to shape his paintings, whether through references to agricultural fields, coastal horizons, architectural forms, or reduced abstract compositions.

Roes received his BA in Art and Education from Gordon College in Massachusetts in 2015. Before pursuing his studio practice more fully, he worked as an art educator in New England and later relocated to the Finger Lakes region of New York. His background in both rural life and visual education informs a practice rooted in observation, composition, and restraint.

His paintings often condense visual information into stylized, carefully structured compositions. Working with hard-edge forms, organic palettes, and layered surfaces, Roes creates images that balance stillness and movement, representation and abstraction. Across his work, landscape is not only a subject, but a framework for exploring memory, design, and the built environment.

Roes has exhibited in galleries and regional institutions throughout New York and New England. His work is represented by Kennedy Gallery & Custom Framing in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and International Art Acquisitions in Rochester, New York.
